The Neuse River in Newbern, NC was experiencing frequent storm surges from hurricanes, so the NC DOT Hydraulics Unit was charged with creating a Storm Water Best Management Practice (BMP). A water quality bio retention swale needed to be constructed, and to do this a 6 foot berm needed to be build next to the river. The durability of the berm ws a concern and rock rip rap would not provide adequate strength.

ARMORMAX® 75, consisting of PYRAMAT 75 High Performance Turf Reinforcement Mat in combination with Engineered Earth Anchors™, was chosen and installed, preventing erosion from the shear stress of the river, as well as uplift from tidal surges and overtopping.

ARMORMAX® held up, even after taking a direct hit by Hurricane Isabell, protecting the berm with no damage.
