Photo showing damaged side slopes, leaving highway vulnerable to falling into the river.

After hurricanes hit Florida, portions of US 1 that run adjacent to the Indian River were damaged severely and vulnerable to falling into the river if emergency measures were not taken.

Approximately 18,000 yds2 of PYRAMAT® 75 HPTRM was used to reinforce the slopes. The slopes were reconstructed using standard slope reconstruction practices and the decision was made to protect the slopes with FDOTs type 3 TRM, the highest strength category they require.

The design provided enhanced factors of safety, vegetation establishment, and sod on the stabilized TRM provided slope that would be almost instantly protected from future storm surges. The project is a showcase for the Brevard Operations District and the Region which covers nine counties including three coastal counties.
