Case Study: Mabel Davis Landfill

Case Study Overview

Project: Mabel Davis Landfill
Location: Austin, TX, United States
Project Type: Shoreline Reinforcement
Application: Landfill Remediation and Stormwater Channel Lining
Product Used: PYRAMAT®

Photo showing over 50 years of erosion through buried hazardous waste.

The City of Austin purchased the Mabel Davis property in 1974, without knowing much of the site had been used for hazardous waste dumping for over 30 years. In 2005, the City initiated a major "brownfields" redevelopment, including reclamation of waterways throughout the future park site.

PYRAMAT® 75 HPTRM was used to line these vegetated channels for erosion protection and allow for vegetated uptake of stormwater pollutants. The system was rapidly deployed for immediate protection and provided an easily installed, aesthetic, vegetated alternative to riprap.

The site won a 2007 Texas Council of Engineering Companies award and is recognized as an EPA brownfield redevelopment success story.
