Project Type: Shoreline Reinforcement

Product Used: ARMORMAX® 75

Photo showing severe ditch erosion, which created risks to nearby farms and roadways.

Vermilion is a thriving agricultural town in Alberta, Canada. Severe ditch erosion was posing potential environmental and safety risks to nearby farms and roadways. the site conditions included sand intrusions within a mainly silty soil profile, creating an environment highly susceptible to erosion. From 2006 to 2009, erosion doubled the ditch scour resulting in gullies nearly 2m deep and unsafe slope and side slope erosion.

ARMORMAX® Engineered Earth Armoring Solution™ was selected to provide a robust permanent repair. This was the first time that Alberta Transportation used the ARMORMAX® system and the project served as a pilot for the new material as well as installation training for contractors and the department staff.

Installation was completed in four days and the site has been regularly monitored during spring melt and intense rainfall. Currently no ditch erosion has been recorded and vegetation is flourishing.
