Problem

The Flagler Estates Road and Water Control District (FERWCD) maintains 400 miles of roadside drainage ditches and 100 miles of canals that manage stormwater runoff from a 7,400-acre rural development. Overland runoff and storm water conveyance caused extreme erosion of these ditch banks, which required reconstruction up to four times a year. FERWCD wanted a solution that would eliminate the continuing maintenance cost.

Solution

SCOURLOK® was selected because it is a permanent bank stabilization solution that offers below water scour protection, slope stabilization and erosion control. Two rows at 45ft each of SCOURLOK were installed along the banks with installation being complete in one day. Additionally, ARMORMAX® was used to stabilize the slope adjacent to the roadway shoulder.

Performance

The combination of SCOURLOK® and ARMORMAX® yielded a vegetated solution that is environmentally friendly to aquatic and amphibious populations. Plus, the project cost was 75 percent less than the District's traditional stabilization method of using concrete bags.
