Problem

The owner of Mountain Trails West Subdivision (S/D) was not sure if the residential development would be profitale given its limited amount of developable area. The adjacent S/D to the east constructed a large rip-rap rock perimeter drainage channel that required a significant amount of land and was not aesthetically pleasing.

Solution

For this S/D development, the design engineer chose ARMORMAX® 75 combined with gabion drop structures to provide erosion and scour protection of the perimeter drainage channel. This solution proveded a significant reduction in land area needed as opposed to hard armoring solutions like rock rip-rap.

Performance

This system's reduced drainage roughness coefficients decreased the land area needed for the perimeter drainage channel, which yielded significantly more residential unit development. Additionally, it provided a vegetated drainage channel with a walking path amenity that is more aesthetically pleasing and provides water quality and habitat improvement.
