Problem

A landfill in New Haven, CT needed to be closed but had become too full for the standard design for closure. A new capping system needed to be designed to safely and cost-effetely close the landfill. They also needed to take into consideration that surrounding wetlands and make sure the new solution would also provide water quality protection. After much research, a new capping system had been designed but would require much steeper slopes than was standard, causing concern for the potential that the slope will take on heavey erosion damage over time.

Solution

To avoid any potential erosion, LANDLOK® Turf Reinforcement Mats (TRMs) were chosen to protect the slopes. TRMs are three-dimensional and/or stitchbonded polypropylene geotextiles that deliver long-term erosion protection. By reinforcing roots and stems, LANDLOK promotes vegetation, which has been recognized by the EPA as the most effective form of erosion control. LANDLOK was installed and then covered with 12 inches of topsoil which was then dormant-seeded for the winter months.

Solution

Performance

LANDLOK held the slopes through a drought and two flood events while being unvegetated with no adverse effects to adjacent wetlands. Once vegetation grew in, the landfill essentially became maintenance-free.
