Problem

The City of Chula Vista planned to restore 5.56 acres of a land that was a known burn site. The remediation intended to contain and cap contaminated soil, transforming the site into part of the Otay Valley Regional Park. The land borders the Otay River for approximately 850 feet, causing concern that the fill slope along the 100-year floodplain could erode during flood events and expose hazardous materials.

Solution

Propex engineers worked with the design engineer to conduct an erosion control analysis focused on the 100-year storm event. PYRAMAT 75 High Performance Turf Reinforcement Mat (HPTRM) was chosen to protect the fill slope and prevent erosion. PYRAMAT 75 was selected over rock rip-rap because it is more cost effective and reinforces vegetation.

Solution

Performance

This vegetated outcome supports a living shoreline, whereas hard armoring can decrease streamside vegetation and adversely impact aquatic life. PYRAMAT 75 also helps to decrease sedimentation and pollutants and encourages infiltration of water back into the ground water table.
