Problem

The University of Arizona (UA) is a world leader in solar energy research and it’s Solar Zone at Tech Park is one of the largest multi-technology solar demonstration sites in the U.S. The 200-acre site includes 95,000 solar panels and more than 100 solar concentrators that generate power. To facilitate storm water runoff from the solar panels, a central drainage channel was incorporated into the project design.

Solution

PYRAMAT® 75 was used to line 41,000 square yards of the channel. PYRAMAT 75 is a high performance turf reinforcement mat (HPTRM) that is highly stabilized to withstand UV degradation for up to 75 years while promoting and reinforcing native vegetation. Hard armoring alternatives were considered, but PYRAMAT 75 was selected because it costs significantly less and installs faster. The HPTRM also features high tensile strength, which was critical for withstanding hydraulic stresses and maintenance equipment.

Performance

Nine years post installation - PYRAMAT 75 has stabilized the drainage channel in an arid environment with a vegetated solution that resists erosion, provides water quality benefits, and is aesthetically pleasing.
