About the Project
A section of Mountain Creek in Red Bank, TN was experiencing extreme erosion directly adjacent to Red Bank Elementary School. If left unaddressed, the creek bank erosion would eventually jeopardize the structural stability of the School’s access road, parking lot, and outdoor classroom. TenneSEA (Student Environmental Alliance), a Chattanooga-based environmental organization that collaborates with communities to teach children about their connection to nature, reached out to local Red Bank Elementary alumni who are involved in the erosion prevention and sediment control industry. A collaborative team of local businesses, non-profit organizations and school and government agencies donated their time and resources to tackle the stream bank restoration project. Students at Red Bank Elementary also played a part in Mountain Creek’s restoration, creating the Stream Team. The program teaches students about the natural world around them by using real-world problems. Students learned about erosion prevention and sediment control and were included in the engineering design process.
