Keyera Pond
Overview
Location: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Project Type: Energy & Mining
Application: Strom Water Drainage System
Product Used: ARMORMAX
Problem
Keyera operates one of the largest natural gas midstream businesses in Canada. Its business consists of natural gas gathering and processing as well as the processing, transportation, storage and marketing of natural gas liquids (NGLs) and crude oil midstream activities. A storm water pond at one of its locations was experiencing erosion due to sandy soils.
Solution
Keyera considered stabilizing the pond bank with rock riprap, but ultimately chose ARMORMAX® because it was easier and more cost effective to install than hard armoring options. Use of ARMORMAX over riprap can reduce the overall project cost by nearly 30 percent and lowered the carbon emissions by up to 90 percent.
Performance
The ARMORMAX system consists of High Performance Turf Reinforcement Mat (HPTRM) and Engineered Earth Anchors (EEA) that work together to lock soil in place and protect against hydraulic stresses. Approximately 2600 m2 was installed around the pond bank.
ARMORMAX was also selected because it is highly UV stabilized and will provide permanent erosion protection to installations with little to no vegetation for up to 75 years. The project owners wanted to restrict wildlife from accessing the pond, so the installation was left unvegetated.
The entire project was installed in only three days.
