Problem

A heavily trafficked section of Interstate 80 in Clarion, PA was experiencing transverse and longitudinal reflective cracking. The pavement also was suffering from the effects of surface moisture infiltration which weakens the pavement foundation layers and aggravates freeze/thaw damage.

PennDOT needed to resurface the road, but they wanted a sustainable solution that would increase the useful life of the roadway. The PETROMAT® Original 4598 paving fabric interlayer system was selected to provide a moisture barrier and a stress absorbing layer to retard reflective cracking.

Solution

PETROMAT is a nonwoven paving fabric that exceeds AASHTO M288 requirements. It installs easily, can double the life of the overlay, and reduces future maintenance.

The existing roadway was milled 2.5 inches and a leveling course was applied. Approximately 305,000 square yards of PETROMAT was installed before 1.5 inches of wearing surface was added.

Performance

PennDOT has approved PETROMAT 4598 and recognizes this rehabilitation strategy to be cost effective in extending the life of their overlays. They plan to continue using this system on future projects.
